What is happening with Bega-Tathra Uniting Church?

This statement is intended to address a simple question about the complex situation:

Some members from our congregations have determined to step away from the umbrella of the Uniting Church in Australia and form a new independent church.

There are other members of our congregations who have not elected to take this step, and they will remain as Uniting Church congregations at Bega and Tathra.

Both groups continue to affirm Jesus’ saving work in His death and resurrection as the centre of our faith, and trust in the Bible as God’s Word.

The split that is occurring is not due to disagreement between parishioners.

Those who are leaving are splitting from the Uniting Church in Australia to create an independent evangelical church.

Those who are staying are choosing to remain as an evangelical presence within the Uniting Church.

It is proposed that the new church will hold its first service on Sunday, 29th July, 2018. In the weeks until then we will continue to meet and worship together at Bega and Tathra Uniting churches.

This time of impending change may well be awkward, and some will find it much harder to deal with than others.

Parting company is not an easy thing to do. There is both joy and sorrow.

May this be an opportunity for Christ to be honoured in our interactions.

Acknowledgement is made of those many members who, as yet, are undecided as to their future place of worship. There is much to consider.

The continuing period of transition gives time for conversations to occur as people seek to understand/come to terms with what is taking place.

It will also allow time for many pastoral and administrative details to be addressed within both churches.

If you have any questions regarding either the continuing BTUC or the new entity, please do not hesitate to speak with a representative from either, or both.

Such conversations are encouraged.
